What brought Kennedy to Dallas
The president came to Dallas for two reasons in 1963. Kennedy wanted to mend political fences critical to re-election. A bitter feud between John Connally and Rick Yarborough threatened to tear Democrats apart. Also Congressman Jim Wright wanted to thank Kennedy for his support to build the TFX Fighter plane in Fort Worth.
What makes the 50th anniversary more important and historic compared to years past?
The 50th anniversary of the John F. Kennedy Assassination is believed to be the most historic to date. It’s probably the final time those alive on the day of the assassination will be able to share their story publicly. It’s also the last time those who weren’t alive will hear the stories from those who witnessed this event first-hand.
Who has a story to share?
Just about anyone alive can tell you where they were during the John F. Kennedy Assassination. The stories most remembered are stories from the locals who shared some type of first-hand connection to Kennedy or events surrounding the assassination. Maybe it was a band member who played “Hail To The Chief” at the President’s final breakfast in Fort Worth and snatched a dinner roll from the President’s breakfast plate. Maybe it was the person who had a run-in with secret service while trying to get one of Kennedy’s final autographs. Maybe it was the child who was present to witness her Grandmother renting Lee Harvey Oswald a boarding room in their house so he had a place to sleep.
These are just a few of the stories you’ll have the chance to hear one final time as Dallas commemorates 50 years.
